No. 3 Official at the Justice Department Is Stepping Down

House intelligence committee votes to make classified Democrat memo public Rachel Brand, The Third-Ranking Justice Department Official, Is Stepping Down
Ray Hunter | 10 February, 2018, 09:46

The sudden departure follows months of unrest within the top echelons of federal law-enforcement in the USA, due in part to the increasingly fiery rhetoric from President Donald Trump and his allies, who have sought to cast a pall of suspicion over the DOJ and the FBI.

Brand's departure was first reported Friday by the New York Times.

Brand, the Associate Attorney General, would be next in line to oversee Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's election interference, if President Donald Trump fired Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

In a statement, Brand said she is proud of the department's accomplishments during her short time there.

Ms. Brand, who has previously served in both the White House and the Justice Department, was confirmed by the Senate in May. Brand would likely have taken over-because of the fact that Attorney General Jeff Session has recused himself from the investigation. She has held government positions over the course of three presidential administrations. Still, that she would leave after just nine months in the administration suggests that conflict has destabilized the upper echelons of the Justice Department. Mr. Trump, who has called the investigation a witch hunt, has considered firing Mr. Rosenstein.

PM arrives in Jordan
PM @narendramodi had a very cordial meeting with His Majesty King of Jordan immediately upon arrival in Amman. This is Modi's first visit to Jordan and also the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 30 years.

The attacks have escalated as Republicans in Congress criticised the handling by the Justice Department, FBI and Federal Intelligence Surveillance Court of warrants for surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page, who had ties to Russian Federation.

When Trump was asked by a reporter whether he was then more likely to fire Rosenstein and whether he had confidence in him, Trump replied "you figure that one out".

According to the Washington Examiner, "The announcement Friday arrives following last week's release of a controversial House Intelligence Committee memo that outlines alleged surveillance authority abuse by the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Trump has also criticised Sessions for recusing himself.

Her position gives her oversight over a wide range of Justice Department offices and initiatives, including the civil rights and antitrust divisions.
