Canada's Max Parrot emerged as the highest scorer during the qualification, which sees each athlete have two attempts to register the highest possible score, with the competitor's best run counting as their qualification score. The bronze medallist in slopestyle at Sochi - where he rode on a recently broken rib - crashed into a tree in the Whistler backcountry a year ago, shattering several bones and requiring multiple surgeries to correct life-threatening injuries.

It was 17-year-old American, Redmond Gerard, who did what Toutant couldn't, delivering a near flawless final run for a score of 87.16 and a gold medal position.

Toutant was the sole Canadian in the morning heat, and Nicholson, at 22 years old the youngest member of the team, was first off in the afternoon heat.

The Dutch-born, Calgary-based skater said he didn't know if he had beaten Pedersen when he crossed the finish line. "I probably shouldn't even be here", said the seven-time X-Games champion. "I would just be so embarrassed". With the bronze, McMorris is now the first Canadian man to win multiple Olympic snowboard medals.

Then it was on to the fireworks from McMorris and Parrot.

South Korean television showed its smiling president entering a reception room Saturday and shaking hands with the North Koreans. And so, with a little help from a liberal South Korean president eager to engage Pyongyang, the 2018 Pyeongchang Games open.

Mark McMorris completed his remarkable comeback from injury and was in a gold medal position heading into the final run. It's the second medal for McMorris, who put up a score of 85.20, narrowly behind Parrot's 86.00. "I was so exhausted I could barely stand on my legs but just taking every risk and giving it all to get ahead". They were the same tricks in my first run, just cleaner.

Every boarder had three runs on the course, with each athlete's result calculated as the best score of the three as assessed by the nine judges.

"I was pretty sure I was going to die", recalled the Canadian snowboarder, who had mistimed a jump and struck a tree in mid-air. "Don't get me wrong, it's really tough sometimes but in the end enjoying it is the big secret". "And I think for the show it's better, too". "I mean, might as well, we're here, it's the Olympics", he said.

Toutant, who said before the week started that he thought Canada could sweep the podium at slopestyle, certainly wasn't backing away from that talk on Saturday.
