He also labelled the original court ruling a coup and a plot.

"We believe that the Maldives government, political parties and people have the wisdom and ability to cope with the present situation themselves", Geng told a daily news briefing. "We must remove him from power", calling for the Indian envoy and military to be sent.

Yameen has rolled back a series of democratic reforms during his five years in office and said that the court overstepped its authority in ordering the politicians released, saying the order "blatantly disrupts the systems of checks and balances".

Former foreign secretary Shyam Saran also said India's options would be limited if it made a decision to "go it alone" in the Maldives, even though President Yameen's actions to contravene the Constitution could be seen as a "challenge to worldwide order".

In the last few days, the political crisis in Maldives has worsened with president Abdulla Yameen declaring a state of emergency in the country for 15 days.

The European Union has said that it expects the Maldivian government to engage in inclusive dialogue with the leaders of all political parties to pave way for "transparent and credible" polls, amid a face-off between the government and the Supreme Court.

Mr Yameen, 58, has presided over an escalating crackdown on dissent in the upmarket holiday paradise that has left nearly all the political opposition jailed since he came to power in 2013.

Addressing the nation on state television, Yameen said he had acted to prevent a coup, and suggested that the judges had chosen to side with his opponents because they were being investigated for corruption.

Yameen on Sunday refused to accept the Supreme Court order to release political prisoners and reinstate 12 MPs who defected to the opposition.

"Government continues to carefully monitor the situation", the statement said.

Early on Tuesday opposition leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was charged with bribery and attempting to overthrow the government, his lawyer said on Twitter.

He was also president between 1978 to 2008 when the Maldives, which relies on tourism, became a multi-party democracy.

She added, "President Yameen's refusal to implement the ruling puts him outside his constitutional mandate". He lost the 2013 election to Yameen, then was convicted under Maldives' anti-terrorism laws in a trial widely criticized by worldwide rights groups.
