The 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea have been largely without incident so far by way of injuries, but US luger Emily Sweeney fell victim to a particularly unsafe crash that easily could have resulted in debilitating pain.

A frightening scene unfolded Tuesday night as American Emily Sweeney spun out of control during her fourth run and tumbled down the track, causing a stoppage of play during the finals of the women's singles luge competition. She was being taken for further evaluation, but a USA Luge spokesperson said he wasn't sure whether she would undergo concussion protocol.

Emily Sweeney starts to lose control of her toboggan before crashing. The stands were filled with fans cheering raucously, and they immediately went silent waiting for some sort of sign that Sweeney would be all right.

She was conscious and was able to walk off the ice with some assistance.

There are over 100 different types of roses but the most commonly used for the romantic holiday is the modern red rose. Baker said even though it is the busiest day for them it is worth it to know they are making someone's day.

Emily Sweeney's mum, Sue (centre), watches on in horror as her daughter crashes during her luge run. As she was helped into an ambulance, Sweeney reportedly assured spectators, "I'm fine". Crashes, however, have not come as often as they did in the 2006 and 2010 Games, both of which left athletes openly complaining about track safety.

Once she was clear of the course, competition resumed.

The other two US lugers, Erin Hamlin and Britcher, placed sixth and 19th, respectively.

Sweeney, 24, is competing in her first Olympics after missing out on a spot in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
