According to Mr Hoylman and Ms Simotas, this new packaging would make the pods less appealing - and protect people from accidentally consuming the candy-like laundry detergent pods.

Two state lawmakers from NY are the latest to call for changes, reintroducing a 2015 bill that would require manufacturers to add warning labels, make the packets a uniform color, and start selling them in child-resistant packaging.

They are asking that the pods be wrapped in child resistant packaging, and be made in a duller, more uniform color.

Hoylman and Simotas also on Tuesday sent a letter to Tide parent company Procter & Gamble, demanding it make the product look, taste and smell less appetizing.

The legislation is a sensible measure to address the products' dangers, they said.

And, the company enlisted Tide spokesman, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, to make videos for social media warning against eating the pods.

Tide has tried to address the freaky trend in January when they partnered with New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski to release a PSA asking people to not eat the detergent pods.

"However, even the most stringent standards and protocols, labels and warnings can't prevent intentional abuse fueled by poor judgment and the desire for popularity", Taylor said in the statement.

Assemblyman Karl Brabenec said he thinks the state should be focusing on other priorities.
