Jacob Zuma recalled by South Africa's ruling party

South Africa's ruling party recalls Zuma Jacob Zuma resigns as president of South Africa

Zuma then chose to fight back-and outrageously said he wanted three months' notice and guarantees about his future. "A former cabinet official blew the whistle and said the Guptas offered him a $50 million dollar bribe", Granitz reports.

President Jacob Zuma, who has been recalled by the African National Congress (ANC), will address the media in Pretoria on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) party has given Zuma until the end of the day to resign.

ANC officials admitted they had no idea whether Zuma would bow to the party's demand - which has no constitutional effect - or cling on to power and face a vote of no confidence in parliament organized by opposition parties. He was expected to respond to a formal request from the party to step down at some point on Wednesday.

While Zuma, 75, has survived a number of no confidence votes before, his supporters now see him as a political liability.

But Zuma would not be legally obliged to step down and he could technically carry on as President of South Africa despite losing the faith of his party.

ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule broke the news to a packed news conference at the party's headquarters in Johannesburg on Tuesday, saying: "The NEC decided as follows: to recall comrade Jacob Zuma in accordance with the ANC constitution".

Corruption scandals involving Zuma have sunk the popularity of the ANC, which holds stature as a key player that fought white minority rule and is credited with the dismantling of apartheid in 1991.

"I can confirm that the Chief Whip has called an urgent caucus meeting‚ which will sit at 10am tomorrow‚" said Nonceba Mhlauli‚ a spokesperson for the office of ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu.

"The problem is that the ANC have tried to this - as they have put it - without humiliating the president", she said.

"We will possibly elect a new president on Thursday ... if not Friday", ANC treasurer general Paul Mashatile told journalists, assuming scandal-hit Zuma will lose the vote.

Zuma faces 783 criminal charges, including money laundering, racketeering and fraud linked to a government arms deal procurement deal in 1999.

An opposition-sponsored motion of no confidence in Zuma had been scheduled for February 22, but the ruling party joined opposition leaders in pushing for the date to be moved to this week in a rare show of unity among rival political factions.

Earlier, News24 reported that if Zuma had refused to resign even after a decision to recall him, the battleground would move to Parliament.

Zuma is not the first ANC member to be accused of corruption, and the party has sought to show a unified front to the South African people.
