D'Baha, who went by the nickname "Moya" and whose legal name was Muhiyyidin Moye, had made headlines in February 2017 after he was caught on a live broadcast trying to tear a Confederate flag away from a South Carolina Secessionist Party demonstrator after leaping over police tape during a rally in downtown Charleston.

Muhiyidin Elamin Moye, who preferred to be called Muhiyidin d'Baha, was shot in the thigh while riding a bicycle in New Orleans, according to The New Orleans Advocate. d'Baha was taken to a hospital but died there later in the morning.

"We are lost right now", Moye's sister Kimberli Duncan said."But we are going to find our way". They spotted a black mountain bike across the street "covered in blood along the right side of the bike", the report said. "This was his passion, he did it from the heart he was loving he was amusing, he was smart but it bothered him, the injustice just bothered him and it never rested well with him", she added.

The national Black Lives Matter movement Moye helped lead began in about 2013 in protest of the fatal shootings of black people, primarily by police.

"I thank God for placing him here to be the solider that he is, that he was,"Anthony said".

Following the news Tuesday that Moye had died, Thomas Dixon, a pastor and political activist, remembered Moye as a "brother" and "soldier". I, for one, know just how much you enriched my life. "There was a quality that he possessed that just drew people to him".

Turkish soldier killed in attack in Syria's Idlib province
An offensive by Ankara to rout USA -backed Syrian Kurdish fighters from the northern enclave of Afrin is now in its third week. Almost 200 people were wounded, and rescuers said many of those probably will not survive because of lack of medical supplies.

"He was a strong leader who deeply understood the role of community and the power of helping other people recognize that role", Mckesson said.

His family says while he was in New Orleans he was continuing his mission. "The last thing he said to me was that he was doing community work out of town and that he was learning so that he could come back to Charleston and help empower the people".

Beau Tidwell, a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department, didn't elaborate on the shooting. Officials did not confirm whether they are seeking to look at any surveillance video, but say an investigation is ongoing.

Many of Moye's fellow activists took to social media to mourn the 32-year-old.

An officer - responding to a call of shots fired, which was upgraded to a call of aggravated battery by shooting - arrived about 1:24 a.m. Tuesday in the city's Gravier neighborhood and found Muhiydin Moye on the ground bleeding, about two blocks from University Medical Center, according to an incident report.

"[D'baha's] body is now in New Orleans, LA, and we are raising money to bring him home to Charleston and then have a memorial service/funeral for his family and friends", Weaver wrote on the website.
