The company publicly apologised on Thursday and released a statement aiming to clarify what it called a "misunderstanding" about "some changes we're making". "We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down", the unsigned letter (https://www.apple.com/iphone-battery-and-performance/) said.

To make amends, Apple will temporarily drop the price of replacement batteries to $29 starting in late January.

The tech giant on Thursday apologized to customers after admitting it deliberately slowed down older iPhone models to offset battery wear, and said it will slash the price of replacement iPhone batteries to $29. The stock is up 47.7% so far this year, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which counts Apple as a component, has increased 25.7%.

Apple began this practice when it released iOS 10.2.1 a year ago, to stop the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE from shutting down from troubling power circumstances like cold weather, low battery charge or battery aging.

Apple is already facing a series of lawsuits over the controversy surrounding it intentionally slowing older iPhones. "Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that". Apple explains that aged batteries can result in random shutdowns, and to avoid such shutdowns, the company throttles a phone's peak performance, according to a newly published support article.

Apple was sued this month for allegedly slowing down older iPhones to save battery life. Older batteries are occasionally unable to deliver necessary energy loads, sometimes causing the device to shut down, it said. A number of people have filed lawsuits over the feature and are seeking class action status.

Apple made the move to address concerns about the quality and durability of its products at a time when it is charging $999 for its newest flagship model, the iPhone X. Apple also will include a new feature in its next operating system update that lets iPhone users check the health of their iPhone's battery. But, in the new statement, the company said it now believes the change in performance is also due to "the continued chemical aging of the batteries in older iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s devices".

Apple also said it will release a new iOS update that will allow users to see more about the health of their phone's battery.
