A three-year-old boy playing with stove burners accidentally ignited the fire that ripped through a NY apartment building, killing 12 people including four children, the city's fire department chief has said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The blaze Thursday night left 12 people dead including a child around a year old and four more people fighting for their lives.

28 a fire erupted on the first floor of an apartment building in the Bronx, killing 12 people.

Officials and relatives have identified five of the victims: 2- and 7-year-old girls named Kylie and Charmela Francis, and their mother, 37-year-old Karen Francis; 19-year-old Shantay Young; and 58-year-old Maria Batiz.

Some tenants of the building climbed down fire escapes. It took him a moment to realize what was happening.

City officials say the fire swept through the building after a 3-year-old boy in a first-floor apartment turned on a stove burner. He ran out in his bathrobe, jacket and sandals.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro has called the fire, "historic in its magnitude", because of the number of lives lost.

The blaze broke out Thursday evening in a 25-apartment building near the Bronx Zoo, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the USA financial capital.

NEW YORK (AP) - Police on Saturday released the identities of an additional seven victims of New York City's deadliest fire in decades, including a 7-month-old baby girl who was among the dozen people who lost their lives.

The New York Times reports that Mensah passed away due to smoke inhalation while saving people from a burning apartment building that neighbored his own residence. The apartment building at 2363 Prospect Ave., is about half a mile from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in the Bronx, the northernmost borough in New York City.

About 170 firefighters are at the five-story, walk-up apartment house. Mayor Bill de Blasio says "nothing problematic about the building ... contributed to this tragedy". Nine children and one adult died in a blaze sparked by a space heater.

D&E Equities said through spokesman Ronn Torossian that it is communicating with the city about the Thursday fire in the Bronx.

Four other residents were still fighting for their lives Saturday, two days after flames broke out in the century-old building near the Bronx Zoo.

FDNY photos show ladders stretched to the roof of the five-story building.

Firefighters were on the scene in just over three minutes, but for some, it was already too late.

A spokesman for the city's Department of Housing Preservation & Development said the 26-unit building has a "relatively low history of fix violations".

City officials are advising people in the area to close their windows to keep out the smoke.
